Rescue workers searched the rubble for survivors through the night. Three children were trapped under a building that had collapsed in La Rita, a small village near Casamicciola. The youngest, a 7-month-old, was rescued during the night. The other two were his brothers. One, a 7-year-old, was freed in the morning, after firefighters had remained in contact with the children all night. The third child, age 11, was removed from the rubble on Tuesday, about 16 hours after the earthquake. Italian news media showed the boy, covered in dust, being whisked on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance.
A spokeswoman for the Civil Protection Department said that no one had been reported missing.
More than 1,000 people were ferried off the island, a popular tourist resort, during the night, and hundreds of others gathered at ports on Tuesday morning, waiting to leave.
